There have been a number of letters about Social Security. Most are confused. Here's a clear statement.
There is no crisis, regardless of what "WMD" George says. Remember that "Free Lunch" George says many things, and none of them are true. If "Dead or alive" George says something, the opposite is always true. As Democrats are saying, there is a problem, which can be fixed while preserving the "social insurance" nature of Social Security.
In 1986, Social Security was reformed. It was designed to accumulate huge surpluses, which were supposed to pay down the debt. "Huge tax cuts for rich folks" George stole this money. He gave it to his millionaire buddies. He gave it as subsidies to huge corporations, which used the money to outsource good jobs. The Republican theft of this money is at the heart of the current Social Security problem. Here's the dirty secret: They stole the money, and they don't want to give it back.
What is amazing, of course, is that "Adding is hard!" George wants to finance his piratization swindle by borrowing more money. They already stole the money. Now they want ordinary Americans to borrow money to cover up their theft? That's a Republican idea for you - steal from the poor, sell them loans and charge them interest, getting them coming, going and in between. Clever!
Social Security can be fixed by several small adjustments. First, taxes on the Social Security thieves should be raised. Corporations should be paying huge amounts of money for every American job that has been sent to India. Second, the retirement age could be slightly raised. These would fix the problem.
