Republicans in the US House of Representatives have introduced a measure that would green-light a possible Israeli bombing campaign against Iran.
Resolution 1553 provides explicit support for military strikes against Iran, stating that Congress backs Israel's use of 'all means necessary' against Iran, "including the use of military force," BBC Persian reported.
"Expressing support for the State of Israel’s right to defend Israeli sovereignty, to protect the lives and safety of the Israeli people, and to use all means necessary to confront and eliminate nuclear threats posed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the use of military force if no other peaceful solution can be found within reasonable time to protect against such an immediate and existential threat to the State of Israel."
Don't Let Congress Green-Light Attack on Iran
This is the first step necessary to enable war with Iran.
The Obama Administration quietly resisted Congressional efforts to pass unilateral economic sanctions for over a year, before ultimately giving in to Congressional pressure. Now that “crippling” sanctions have been put in place, the far-right wing and Iran-hawks have begun openly advocating for what has always been their ultimate objective: war with Iran.
As we begin to debate war in earnest, we cannot let history repeat itself.
Numerous credible studies have concluded that such strikes would suck the US into the conflict that would engulf the region in war and put so much at risk:
The lives of innocent Americans, Iranians, and Israelis
The Pro-Democracy Movement in Iran
U.S. National Security and the stability of Iraq and Afghanistan
The global economy, which relies on oil flowing through the Persian Gulf
We cannot permit this idea to gain ground. However distant or unrealistic a war with Iran may appear right now, the advocates of war are moving forward with their agenda and quietly gaining ground.
Take action now, and demand that House Republic Leader John Boehner denounce this resolution and oppose a third war in the Middle East.
