Less than three weeks ago, yet another tragic milestone was reached when the number of U.S. servicemen killed in Iraq reached 2500. And it was when the White House caused (yet more) outrage and disgust for this administration when the
official reaction was:
It's a number
And while one man's "number" is another's husband or wife, father or mother, brother or sister, friend or lover, you would think that the man responsible could at least get the number right. You'd think...
Today, when George W. Bush once more used the troops as a backdrop for his usual "stay the course," and "we have a clear strategy for victory" mantra, he said:
I'm going to make you this promise: I'm not going to allow the sacrifice of 2,527 troops who have died in Iraq to be in vain by pulling out before the job is done.
Perhaps he should have checked with Donald Rumsfeld since, according to the Department of Defense, there has been 2,537 U.S. casualties in Iraq.
A slip of the tongue? A typo by the speechwriter? Who knows...but the next time Bush wants to wax poetic about the bravery and sacrifice of those that serve as he never did, perhaps he could take a moment to make sure he has the correct "number" of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for his war of choice.
