There was an excellent posting earlier today, "Catholic League Sets About Redefining Rape, Too" by Clarknt67. There were a few comments based on a common misconception that the Catholic League and William Donohue are not sanctioned by, nor does he represent, the official views of the Catholic Church. Since only bishops, archbishops, cardinals and the pope can "officially" speak for the Church, in that sense it's true. However, according to the League's website: "The Catholic League is listed in the Official Catholic Directory and has won the plaudits of many bishops." The only way to be listed in the Directory is if the local (arch)bishop puts you there. In this case, since Donohue is located in NYC, then all the New York prelates since the League's founding have made the League an official part of the Catholic Church. Also on this page, you can read the hearty endorsements of half a dozen hierarchs for Donohue.
The Official Catholic Directory is "The authoritative guide to the Catholic Church in the United States and abroad." It lists Mass times, parishes, missions, dioceses, schools, ministries "and other Catholic organizations." Per the Directory's website: "Features include thoroughly updated (arch) diocesan entries, confirmed and approved by each (arch) diocese....Listings for Religious Orders of Men and Women, Missionary Activities and Foreign Missions....Valuable statistics for the 209 (arch) dioceses including two Apostolates, and one Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei, with a detailed General Summary in the index....A map detailing Catholic (arch) diocesan and province boundaries in the United States, etc.
Being listed in the Directory gives each entrant automatic exemption from paying taxes as a 501(c)(3) organization and makes each contribution tax deductible to the donor.
