The Verizon Strike diary on the rec list and Laura Clawson's diary on the same topic are getting lots of comments asking how to help.
(For the record, I am a unionized Verizon employee in Florida. We are still under contract and we are not on strike.)
Here's how everyone can help and show solidarity with the striking workers.
Bottom line: right now, this strike is about Verizon's refusal to negotiate in good faith. If Verizon will agree to start bargaining in good faith, then there is a good chance that the walkout will be a short-lived one.
My impression is that the unions will agree to come back to work without a contract and continue to work as long as Verizon is actually negotiating and not just making unreasonable demands.
For now, we don't want to do anything too extreme that might jeopardize the goal to start true negotiations. If Verizon refuses to return to the bargaining table, then we will be discussing stronger tactics, but for now there are a few simple things you can do.
If you are a Verizon customer, call up and express your dissatisfaction. Tell them that you are monitoring the situation closely and you are ready to switch to another provider. Don't pull the trigger yet, but let them know you are not happy.
If you have any pending orders with Verizon, call and insist on union labor to fulfill your order. If they are sending "replacement workers," refuse to let the scabs onto your property and make sure the company knows why.
My local is making black ribbons for our members to wear while working and not. This is a simple way to raise awareness, let management know that we know what's going on, and to build solidarity. Since we are under contract, we are limited in the actions we can take, however we will ratchet up as needed.
So, spread the word. Hit the FB page for updates. Like it. Share it.
If you see some picketers, stop and join them. Bring bottled water. Wave a sign while a striker takes a break.
You get the idea. We want to spread the word and we will act soon as needed.
Solidarity.
