On a post-election conference call with reporters today, Wisconsin Democratic chair Mike Tate sounded upbeat and combative. Perhaps most notably, he made it clear that the Democratic Party of Wisconsin is still keen on its
earlier vow to recall Scott Walker next year.
On last night's results, Tate said, "If this had been a statewide election, I believe Scott Walker would have been recalled." He added that "the Democratic Party is willing ... to get rid of Scott Walker's reign of terror as soon as possible."
In a nod to the ongoing debate about whether it is better to initiate the recall against Scott Walker as soon as possible (which would mean petitions start to be gathered in November), or in the spring so that the recall election coincides with the 2012 presidential general election, Tate later clarified "as soon as possible" to "as soon as feasible." While this clarification was likely is a confirmation of Tate's stated preference for the recall election against Walker to coincide with the presidential election, Tate also made it clear that the timing of the recall will largely be up to the citizen activists who initiate it. "We will not drive the train on the timing of a recall of Gov Walker," said Tate. "We will work with citizen groups on the effort."
