The latest New York Times/CBS News poll reiterates what we've been hearing from the American public for more than a year, since the issue of the Bush tax cuts expiring was raised. The top priority for Americans is jobs, and they want it paid for by making the wealthy and corporations cough up some additional taxes.
Via Matt Yglesias, here's the breakdown on job creation strategies:
They also asked what strategies are a good idea, which are a bad idea for job creation. Dave Weigel point out that the public says to "Do what the Democrats are saying."
And this: "Who do Americans want to tax? Millionaires. The ballyhooed 1 Percent. They really, really want to tax those people. Approximately four times as many Republicans want to tax those people as say they approve of Congress."
Ok, so Republicans aren't going to let that happen. Well, good. It makes the political fight for next year that much easier. Keep the GOP standing up for the one percent, and don't waiver from the fight for the 99 percent. And maybe the 99 percent will finally be able to get loud enough for even House Speaker John Boehner to hear. If not, and Democrats play it right—that means listening to the 99 percent, understanding and internalizing the message that they are also responsible for how fucked up the country is and need to be the ones to fix it—Boehner could have to surrender his gavel in January, 2013.
