Hello everyone. Tonight’s Musical Moondays is going to be on one of my favorite bands of all time. For once it’s not necessarily a punk, ska, or Reggae band though they were influenced a lot by Husker Du, at least Frank Black was. This band basically is confirmed to have been the most influent on Kurt Cobain. This band in question is known as the Pixies.
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986. The group consists of Frank Black (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago(lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals), and David Lovering (drums). While the Pixies found only modest success in their home country, they were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe. The group disbanded in 1993 under acrimonious circumstances but reunited in 2004.
The band's style of music contains elements including indie rock and surf rock. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter and singer who has been noted for his yowling delivery. He has typically written about offbeat subjects, such as extraterrestrials, surrealism and biblical violence.
The group has been described as a big influence on the alternative rock boom of the 1990s, though they disbanded before reaping any of the benefits this might have brought them.
They have influenced many people and like many great bands they were only appreciated in the U.K first as the U.K seems to recognize talent early on when it comes to great art of all kinds.
Most people I know are just fairly recently getting into them, well years ago when the movie Fight Club came out and “Where is My Mind?” gained notoriety, but I was a fan in the early nineties as a teenager. I would recommend watching this excellent fan video that mends with the song better than anything I’ve ever seen. It really takes you where you’re supposed to go with this song better than anything I’ve ever seen. Mad props to the director too.
I also have to give props to the people who animated this wonderful video I would also watch full screen like the last one. It reminds of the style of the Gorillaz videos. I love that style. I love this song too.
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Songs about El Nino rule: Wave of Mutilation
Like many bands with extreme talents such as Francis Black and Kim Deal, acrimony erupts eventually somehow, but it’s hard to quite pinpoint when ti happened and why. I love them both especially Kim Deal who has a great sense of humor about the whole thing and what people perceive about her and the band’s breakup.
:D
So Gouge Away. Stay in this diary all day…if you want to…
I could seriously post Pixies sons all day, but I’ll explain what happened when they broke up in 1993. Kim Deal formed another great band called the Breeders with her twin sister (I love twins in all aspects):
Cannonball (this video and song bring back many memories)
And Frank black’s solo songs are also great and his work with Frank Black and the Catholics. I love this one and I will…
But let’s be honest. Everyone wants to see the Pixies. As Frank Black said, he can’t escape the Pixies.
Break My Body
Tame
Levitate Me
Here comes Your Man
Now that I brought you to Musical Heaven I’ll end with Kim Deal taking us all to....
Heaven
I love this band and I love you too but because I am now in a good mood from listening to these songs and remembering the ecstasy and the angst of my upbringing. Weird how that works and only part of that makes sense, but this is the end of the diary my friends. Until we meet again.
