Mitt Romney voted for Paul Tsongas in the Democratic presidential primary in 1992. Why? He's given several reasons (of course), but among them:
When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I’d vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for the Republican.
It's payback time.
And if he loses, and tries to blame it on Democrats, even better. Let him look like a pathetic whiner who can't even beat Daily Kos. That'll ingratiate him with Republicans looking for someone tough enough to take out President Barack Obama this November. And really, given that polling suggests he won't break 40 percent, what few thousand votes we'll end up driving Rick Santorum's way will be the least of this problems.
But there's this -- if Santorum and Romney end up trading charges back and forth about how Michigan turned out, then good! That's the point! This GOP nomination contest is a clown show. Anything that keeps it going, keeps Republicans in a state of chaos, and keeps Obama looking better and better in comparison is a win for us.
And no matter how much Romney might whine if he loses as a result to Democratic crossover vote, remember -- we won't be doing anything that Mitt Romney didn't already do.
Incidentally, we blasted the 8,500+ people on our Michigan activism list, and the email received one of our best responses ever. Yes, I realize many on Daily Kos don't like the tactic, but our Michigan members overwhelmingly loved it. Throw in the Michigan Democratic Party's efforts to get Democrats to vote GOP, and the efforts by the Obama campaign, Obama's Super PAC, and MoveOn to depress Romney's support, and we have a real team effort to deliver Santorum his victory.
