The headline on CNN.com for
Dana Bash's post on John Boehner's response to Rush Limbaugh's disgusting display of misogyny:
TRENDING: First on CNN: Boehner hits Limbaugh's comments as 'inappropriate'
But what did John Boehner actually say? Well, nothing. But his spokesman did:
"The speaker obviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate, as is trying to raise money off the situation," Michael Steel, Boehner's spokesman, told CNN.
So John Boehner didn't hit Rush Limbaugh after all—his spokesman merely characterized Boehner as believing Limbaugh's choice of words was "inappropriate," as if the only thing wrong with what Limbaugh said was that he used a few poorly chosen words. But as weak as that was, Boehner's spokesman didn't leave it there: he also went after Democrats and progressives, saying it was just as "inappropriate" for them to fight back against Rush Limbaugh and Rush Limbaugh's allies as it was for Rush Limbaugh to choose the words that he chose.
Bottom-line: John Boehner didn't hit Rush Limbaugh. And his spokesman tried to have it both ways.
