During a town hall in Illinois Monday evening, the former Massachusetts governor told a voter to “vote for the other guy” if she wanted access to “free birth control” and said that the federal government should not subsidize women’s health care through Planned Parenthood:
First of all, the "birth control" that Republicans have made a central issue in this election is the mandate of the Affordable Care Act that requires employers to cover contraception. So it isn't "free." It's part of an insurance plan, and no different than the basic medical coverage you receive when you pay your premiums into your employer's plan. Apparently Romney has never had to rely on an employer's insurance plan.
Unbelievably, Romney decided to double down, attacking Planned Parenthood--again:
Q: I’m just wondering where you would suggest that the millions of women who receive their health services, such as mammograms, and HPV vaccines go?
ROMNEY: Well, they could go wherever they’d like to go — this is a free society. But here is what I say, which is the federal government should not tax these people to pay for Planned Parenthood. There are a lot of things that we have in our society that we may like, that we might not like, but that government should not be paying for.
Hear that, women? It's a "free society."
Virginia women, at least, are not impressed.
It’s a flashing red light for Mitt Romney in the latest Quinnipiac poll in Virginia. Not only does President Obama beat him in a head to head hypothetical match up, 50-42, but Obama leads among women by 13 points — 52-39. He leads with independent voters 46-43% President Obama’s favorables in the poll are 51 – 44; Romney’s are negative — 36 – 43.
I have only one thing to say to you, Mitt:
"I'll just say this, which is, it's not the language I would have used."
