Allen West, America's Dumbest Congressman
Courtesy of Republican Congressman Allen West, we may finally have an explanation for why Rep. Bobby Rush was kicked off the floor of the House
after he put on a hoodie during a speech about Trayvon Martin. You're going to love this one. No, seriously,
it's a damn classic:
Tea Party Rep. Allen West (R-FL) thinks that was the right move, telling radio host Laura Ingraham that Rush’s stunt caused a security concern because police were unable to recognize Rush:
WEST: They’re watching us real close now. … Right now, the security folks there on the House floor are laughing about it, but initially, they did not know who it was. And hey were concerned that someone had just walked off the street, or you know, wondered off a tour group.
Really?
Really? Wow.
So according to Allen West, Rep. Rush went to the podium, was recognized by the chairman to speak, during his speech he removed his jacket to reveal the hoodie, and everyone was like, "Oh my goodness! Where did Congressman Rush go!"
The only way this makes sense is if a black man donning a hoodie really does abso-freaking-lutely camouflage them to the point where even a freaking United States Congressman, during a freaking speech, can put one on in full view of the entire nation and suddenly turn into a terrifyingly suspicious person. Why, that's not Rep. Bobby Rush at all! It's someone wearing a hoodie!
Good God—I don't remember if I ever gave out the award for America's Dumbest Congressman before, and if I ever did, who I gave it to, but if I did I'm taking it back and rewarding it to Allen West right effing now.
For lacking goddamned object permanence, Mr. West, you are now the official holder of the title.
