Isn't this area protected because it's part of a National Monument and an Historical Site?
On June 08 2012, a state commission approved spectra energy’s proposal to run a section of the Houston energy giant’s controversial natural gas pipeline below ground in Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Gas pipeline to be put under Liberty State Park in Jersey City NJ. spectra energy wins state approval Friday June 08 2012 by Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
No!
Not Near Liberty State Park!
Absolutely Not!
Are they, spectra and those making money from the gas pipeline trying to destroy us completely?

spectra pipeline to go through Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken. gets okay from feds Tuesday May 22 2012 by The Jersey Journal
[Update June 25 2012] Gas Main Ruptured! Pressure on ruptured gas main on Jersey City-Bayonne border is reduced, but repairs are ongoing. by Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal
This is the area, where spectra wants to cut across the east side of the Bayonne/Jersey City Border to go to New York City. That's why it goes under Liberty State Park (also, I'm sure I read in one of these links under the Statue of Liberty, but can't find it now).
The problem is; that the eastern border of Bayonne And Jersey City is a peninsula and used to be a canal 100 years ago.

Bayonne Hoboken prepare for flooding as major storm hits Hudson County Thursday July 26 2012 by Matthew McNab/The Jersey Journal
That's exactly where the Morris Canal was.
The Morris Canal stretched from Phillipsburg on the Delaware River at its western end to Jersey City on the Hudson River at its eastern end.
Building even more gas pipeline in this area is an ecological disaster, just waiting to happen.
One good explosion like in Nyack; (Heaven Forbid) and the whole area could break up and sink! [Update June 22] 2012 Jersey City mayor says natural-gas explosion in Nyack is 'perfect example of dangers of spectra pipeline by Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
Not kidding. Peninsulas are fragile. Especially an area where a canal has been filled in.
paenīnsula
"paene-": almost + "īnsula": island; also called a byland or biland) is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.
spectra is cutting corners. Trying to make money at our expense. They throw us crumbs. Like the promise of a job. And destroy where we live!
I don't think so!
It's bad enough they're even being allowed to build this pipeline!
spectra knows that they can stay along the shore line, on the West side of Bayonne's Peninsula and continue building the pipeline up the back of New Jersey Route 440 But that's the long route. spectra wants to use a short-cut!
Rt 440 was all paint factories 100 years ago. That area is totally gone. But Liberty State Park area is heavily populated and an American Treasure!
Rt. 440 is an 8.18-mile (13.16 km) four-lane divided highway in Hudson County running from the Bayonne Bridge in Bayonne to US Route 1/9 Truck in Jersey City.
These two segments are connected by New York State Route 440, which runs across Staten Island.

spectra energy was seeking a 20-year lease on a nearly an acre of parkland that will house the pipe. The company, which received final federal approval for the pipeline on May 21, plans to pay the state about $2.3 million over the course of the lease. by Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
Somebody's gotta be kidding
! The More I Find Out, the more I Know, that I was right in thinking this pipeline is a bad idea
! It's not a good plan to run pipeline along shorelines and
in densely populated areas.
What we need to do is replace and repair our old pipelines, not bring in more.

NASA Temperature Data: 1880-2011
The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience higher temperatures than several decades ago.
The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880.
The finding sustains a trend that has seen the 21st century experience nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record.
NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York released an analysis of how temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century.

Rising sea levels are also a good reason not to allow spectra energy to build this pipeline on our NJ/NY coastlines.

Stop Spectra!
I definitely would not let spectra destroy the few remaining non-industrial parts of Jersey City!
