August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day. I never had a black cat until Pixie adopted us. I have certainly come to appreciate how special black cats can be with her around. I have spoken how she was also a caretaker to my Mom and how she added years to her life. She is now down in North Carolina with me and is a constant source of amusement.
Black cats have always gotten a bad reputation. Too many people think that they are evil. Some people remain in the Middle Ages mentality of thinking black cats are the consorts of witches and warlocks and practitioners of black magic. Cat owners are warned around Halloween to be sure and keep their black cats inside to keep them safe.
I think Pixie’s main function these days is to be silly. She loves to hide. Unfortunately she doesn’t have this hiding thing down very well. She loves to look out the window as the hundreds of little nose prints show. She loves sitting on my lap when I read. Most of all she loves to torment my old cat, Merlin.
So for black cat owners everywhere today is the day to stand up and be counted. I sure appreciate my little one.
