DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too!
No, this diary isn't about scraps. It's titled that way because there are a couple of odds and ends that need to be dealt with.
There are now THREE active projects in which the DK Quilt Guild is engaged:
1. The Okiciyap Project
2. The NFTT Project
3. The VA Wheelchair Quilts Project
glorificus is leading the first two projects and generally will be the one providing updates for those. Sara R is leading the wheelchair quilts project and will be updating you on it. If you have questions on either of these projects or want to volunteer to help, please direct your comments to glorificus or Sara R as noted. (I am not in charge of ANYTHING, just sayin'...)
The tentative schedule is to finish the Okiciyap quilt by the end of February. The NFTT quilt should be done by the end of April to build excitement in May. The VA Wheelchair quilts will be delivered during NN13 in early June.
Today I want to follow up on last week's introduction of the Okiciyap Project, to clarify a few points. After this, glorificus will be keeping you informed on progress.
The Okiciyap Project
Last week glorificus introduced our next DK Quilt Guild group project. Because we will be doing TWO quilts for different purposes, there was a little bit of confusion. This diary, hopefully, will clear that up.
As glorificus told us last week, we will create and auction a quilt for Okiciyap Food Pantry and Youth Center, the foodshelf that provides so much more than food to the Isabel community on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota.
Okiciyap DKos group was formed to support the pantry, and has taken the lead in collecting food and school supplies.
I will assemble the top. When a block is completed, please kosmail me for an address. I would like the blocks by the end of November. Once the top is built, BeadLady will quilt for us again. We hope to have the quilt completed by the end of February
Here are the basic block guidelines:
Colors: The logo includes yellow, tan, red, black and white. Orange would be a great accent.
Size: Blocks need to be 12.5" blocks that will finish at 12".
Fabric: If possible, make them from your fabric stash. You can use solids or prints, batiks or floral, contemporary or reproductions prints. Think of this quilt as a celebration of diversity.
Other: Wash the fabrics before sewing. Hand-dyed fabric, including batiks, will have to be extensively washed before using it any part of the quilt. Hand-dyed fabric can have the color bleed into all the rest of the quilt upon first washing. Wash until a piece of white cotton accepts no more dye and test water remains clear, when the dyed fabric is dunked in the water.
Also, if at all possible, blocks should be made in a smoke-free environment. We don't want a quilt going to a buyer if it smells like smoke.

By my count that is 20. What I DON'T know is if everyone is planning to make TWO blocks, ONE for EACH quilt, or just one. And if just one, which one will it be?? Please tell us in comments what you can help with. Either is fine. Everyone has their own commitments they need to keep, so if you can only do one, please don't fret!
AND THANKS to everyone who supports these efforts!
DK Quilt Guild Admins Needed!
By early November I'll be ending my responsibilities with the DK Quilt Guild, other than on the two projects (Okiciyap and NFTT), to which I am already committed. For each of them I've volunteered to make blocks and assemble the tops, and I will still do that.
Aside from that, I won't be continuing to schedule diaries or to step in if a scheduled diarist is absent, or to fill weeks just because no one has volunteered.
Usually I call for diarists to volunteer. NOW I am calling for an admin to volunteer. In fact it would be best if more than one person steps forward, so they can trade off.
Duties include making sure diaries are scheduled and that scheduled diarists understand what is required from them. Rarely someone won't be able to do their diary as scheduled, and in that case, the admin "on duty" that week should be prepared to step in with a placeholder.
Please comment below or kosmail me if you are interested in taking this on. If for some reason no one volunteers, the weekly guild may die a natural death, even as the projects continue.
Diarists Needed!

9/23 -- vtgal
9/30 -- Pam from Calif
10/7 -- Proud of my Bleeding Heart

Please kosmail me or respond in comments below if you are willing to write and host a diary. Thanks.
