Wouldn't want to be in them, though they are undoubtedly expensive ones. But with the way things are not going in his campaign, everything is pointing to the debate next week. Talk about pressure!
Everyone sees the first debate as a turning point, and it is his last chance. After the first debate, most people have basically made up their mind. And the absentee ballots will start flooding in right after that.
I have listened to the conservative pundits going after him like: he's got to be agressive, he's got to go after the president, he's got to be angry. True, but this has to be done with a certain amount of style. Otherwise, you start to look like a desperate Bob Dole/John McCain type crying: "Stop lying about my record" or "That one!"
And the bar is set very high. Not only because the stakes are so high, but because Romney has portrayed himself as Mr. Competency. We're not talking about W who was an aw-shucks-type-c-average-is-good-enough guy. He quipped his way through the debates and that's all anyone expected. (How could we have elected him, by the way?)
Most debates end up being a draw, but that's not good enough here. Romney needs to really shine to dispel doubts and to live up to his own reputation as Mr. Fix-it. Pressure enough? Well, he asked for it. And that's why I wouldn't want to be in those fancy lace-ups that he's wearing.
