The NRA has 4.3 million members, according to Wikipedia. They spend $1 million per year on campaign contributions, another $2 million+ a year in lobbying, and a whopping $17 million via money from outside groups according according to Opensecrets.org
In other words, they can be defeated. This is not a lot of people and a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. Their campaign contributions ranked 299 out of 20,484 organizations, 176 out of 4219 in lobbying, and 17 out of 275 in outside money.
There can be an equal and opposite force, one that argues for the rights of all of us who prefer that guns used solely to kill human beings not be freely available. People who look at the Second Amendment and know what it means:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
The colonies needed militias on occasion to defend themselves. What this has to do with letting anyone with the cash buy whatever killing machine they want is beyond me.
I submit that We the People have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That right is infringed upon when we allow fanatics to turn our streets and schools into war zones.
We can beat them. We vastly outnumber them, and can vastly outspend them. And we have Reason and in fact the law on our side.
I saw another diary recommending a counter organization the NRA. Branding is important. What's the right name? A great web site is also a prerequisite. How can that be built? As for content -- THIS community could do a world class job of collating the data.
Every time someone is shot / murdered with a gun, that info should be posted. How they got the gun, who made it, how the systems in place failed, whether mental health, domestic violence, laws, regulatory oversight.
We can outlobby, outspend, out argue them. It just takes a small group at first to step up, found the organization and build the site. The rest is awareness building, which is why we are here.
