So my big take away from birding is knowing now that what I do naturally in the wild is flush birds. Three times I interfered drastically with the special event that is observing and attracting birds. I'll likely not be asked back. But I did enjoy my afternoon with them at Bolinas Lagoon, 1.5 hours north of San Francisco. What a great group of serious bird lovers who wear their nerd knowledge as a badge of honor.
Here is lineatus right off the bat telling me to please be quiet as that is the first rule to observing birds:
Ok. Duly noted! Shhhh.... (FAIL: I'm really not cut out to be quiet. Look at side pocket, teacher's pet, so quiet. gah.)
Here is tgypsy enjoying the company of visiting Kossacks from Alaska and in whose honor we are having this birding event, Mrs. realalaskan in the center and realalaskan on the right.
These guys are serious. The all have bird apps on their iPhones to show photos and play bird calls. tgypsy was describing a cool bird they just saw and I couldn't believe the wild description so she pulled up the photo. Amazing, a tiny bird with so many amazing features!

An amazing sighting of something... I think it was a woodpecker. They called it something special. All I remember is it wasn't a woody, it wasn't a pecker. Hopefully lineatus will show up and clean clear this up. Later they were talking about Bush Tits. Oh my.

Apparently this was my second f-up. They were viewing something rare and I jumped in between their lenses and that object to take my long shot. I'll never hear the end of it.
These guys had all kinds of things hanging off their bodies, binoculars, cameras, hip pockets for books. (??)
This is realalaskan with his personal catalog of "seen" birds and here is his favorite page and most prized sighting:
A whooping crane, of which there are very few left in the world.
Next, we drive into Bolinas proper to Keith Hansen's studio. He's an illustrator of birds and has created a nice little garden area for attracting them where he captures on video. This was where I made my third mistake. Upon seeing his lovely garden I rushed in to take a closeup of some lovely tree ferns that were new and unfurling. lineatus tried to stop me but I didn't pay attention and I flushed all the birds that were gathering for Mr. Hansen's camera.

Community Quilt Project NN13 Flash Mob Photo
smileycreek is organizing and asking all Community Quilt recipients to bring their quilts to NN13. We'll assemble at a pre-designated location and time for a group photo with one of the NN13 professional photographers. It will be a group hug celebrating one of the most beloved community building projects we have here at Daily Kos with Sara R and winglion at the center of it. navajo and Glen the Plumber are going to scout out and select a location in advance for all to meet with their quilts for a memorable photo opportunity.
