The Portman Effect continues to work its magic, and by work its magic I mean that more Democratic senators continue to embrace marriage equality while Rob Portman remains the only Republican supporter.
The latest:
Sen. Bob Casey told The Morning Call on Monday he now supports same-sex marriage.
In an exclusive interview, the Pennsylvania Democrat said he had decided over time that the Defense of Marriage Act — the federal law that defines marriage as one man and one woman — should be repealed, and determined that such a belief could not be separate from the overall question of gay marriage.
"I ultimately decided that to make a decision about DOMA was making a decision about marriage equality itself," Casey said.
Casey's decision leaves eight Democrats in the Senate's bigot caucus: Joe Manchin, Bill Nelson, Heidi Heitkamp, Mary Landrieu, Tom Carper, Tim Johnson, Joe Donnelly and Mark Pryor. Of those eight, Carper, of Delaware, stands out like a sore thumb. They're all wrong, but he doesn't have the luxury of a political excuse.
Forty-four Republicans are also members of the bigot caucus: Every GOP senator not named Rob Portman.
