The Uruguay Senate today voted overwhelmingly (23 - 8) in favor of marriage equality. In December 2012, Uruguay's lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, passed almost identical legislation and is expected to pass the Senate's version very soon.
Uruguay's Senate (Camara de Senadores) voted today (2 April) to legalize gay marriage.
The Senate, voted for the ‘Marriage Equality’ bill by an overwhelming majority of 23 for and 8 against...
The lower house is expected to vote and pass the modified bill within two weeks (a technicality, as it already previously voted for it).
Once the legislation is formally passed and signed by Uruguay's President Jose Mujica, Uruguay will have become the 12th nation state to legalize same-sex marriage, and the second in South America.
Next up could well be New Zealand or France.
Check out this diary, And You Thought the US Supreme Court Was the Only News About Marriage Equality... from Sunday for a roundup of marriage equality progress worldwide.
Action is pending three and possibly four US State legislatures: Rhode Island, Illinois, Minnesota and Delaware, and who knows how many more US Senators will "come out" for marriage equality by the time this diary gets published!
The dam, it seems, has broken. Will the US Supreme Court notice or care?
