I know you all think I'm going to talk about slavery... No way... I want to talk about what happened between 1865 and 1965 and beyond. That period is when the die was cast on the growth potential of exslaves into money makers and money savers. The first major calamity "The Freedmans Bank" or as Spike would say the old BAMBOOZLE... The Second and most greivious "THE BETRAYAL BY RUTHERFORD B. HAYES ENDING RECONSTRUCTION" pulling the troops out of South Carolina and Louisiana, effectively delivering the black man into a position worse than slavery. The 3rd constriction "THE BLACK CODES" Jim Crowe laws set against newly freed blacks originating in the south, but following the black man to wherever he travelled in America to control his ability to prosper. The 4th, Tenant farming system where no matter the size of the crop the White plantation owners took advantage of the negroes undeveloped skill of reading and writing and calculating to perpetuate poverty and pseudo slave labor. All of which occurred before the turn of the century.....
After the turn of the century this mistreatment of Blacks had been engrained in the very fabric of the Country. All over the United States white indignation against the black man had taken root and was practiced in every level of social strata from politics, banking, farming, and industry. The Great Migration of blacks from the south to the north, east and west that was a chance to escape one set of bad circumstances just to a new set of the same. Pools of poorly educated blacks arrived in their new streets of hope in large industrial cities were faced with housing and job discrimination the remnants seen today in the city of Chicago , Detroit , Cleveland and many other cities.
Unlike the other new immigrants to America like the Irish, Italian, Polish Dutch and Germans , The Black exslave from Africa had no common language tradition or educational system from which to assimilate and transfer knowledge. When looking at the sorry conditions of which black Americans were living their lives it is any wonder why they didn't just leave and go back to Africa... Oh but they did... Enter Marcus Garvey... Even though black leaders like Dubois were out in front of black issues and had standing as spokesman for black people, it was Garvey who taught black unity and self determination. Garvey preached unity as way to get the boot of the white power structure in America off the neck of the Exslaves who were languishing in the land of milk and honey.
Marcus Garveys movement to industrialize the black community and eventually colonize parts of Africa with repatriated exslaves did not set well with the European and American based Corporate giants and Governments that had been pillaging mother Africa for her riches for centuries. Garvey was stopped and the moment was dismantled.Next up the Great Depression or what black people called just another day at the office...
Blacks in the south were barely touched by the Great Depression they had eeked out a meager existence on the land so while the Blacks in the industrialized cities were effected. The great depression was a footnote in the misery index of the vast majority of the nations blacks that were still languishing in the south. BLACK WALLSTREET, this subject is worth mentioning due to its general use as a way to demonstrate WHITE HATE FOR THE EXSLAVES IN AMERICA. It also demonstrates the methods used against blacks to disassemble any forward progress they made in the era.
TULSA OKLAHOMA 1921, White race riot in the Greenwood section called black Wallstreet destroys black businesses in the most economically advanced community at the time. Along with Valdosta Georgia , East St. Louis Illinois , Chicago and Springfield Ohio, white intolerance for black communities that were growing, these crimes blunted the spirits of those who had gained the knowledge and began to accumulate wealth. Events like this are documented in nearly every state in the union...
THE WAR... A TIME TO CHANGE. Many black Americans benefited from World War 2.
During the war the demand for labor was great and black men and women served as soldiers and labor pool. Ability to buy homes and be educated became a reality even though the Jim Crowe laws still ruled the south in social and economic advancement the rest of the country seemed to be loosening the grip of the tightly held principals of white supremacy over black subjects.
1960's into 70's Civil rights, Free love, Vietnam war and Draft, Drug abuse, Federal Housing Program, ADC. America was changing quickly as blacks were joined by northern Whites in demanding equal rights for Blacks especially in the south. The draft for Vietnam brought thousands of young blacks into military service that would later allow them a chance for benefits and housing.
Drug abuse was rising in black populated areas and began a downward spiral of many hopes and dreams of the waves of black immigrants who had come from the south in the "Great Migration". FEDERAL HOUSING PROGRAM ... The beginning of official federal policy that by design removed the black man from his paternal obligations in homes in order to justify the receipt of government assistance and food stamps. ADC ... AID FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN...
The next federal program that shifted the responsibility of fatherhood especially in black communities to the State and Federal government a major cause of absentee fathers. These events and policies culminated into a perfect storm of poverty in the majority of the Black population rooted in the great Cities...
1980's WAR OF DRUGS TURNS INTO A WAR ON DRUGS AND THE PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX... Heroin, Marijuana a and cocaine which was controlled by the Italian Mob in the big cities since the 1930's became a cottage industry within the black community as a form of enterprise that today claims the lives of young men involved in the trade and those caught in the crossfire. Crack cocaine which spilled out of the now and forever branded "Ghettos" into the white suburbs caused a "War on drugs" which effectively morphed into a war on young black men and their induction to the new "Prison Industrial Complex".
Today after more than a century after the end of "Slavery of Blacks from Africa" as a source of industry in the United States, the majority of Blacks are still living under the effect of the influence of the policies, behavior, ill will, and hate of their former masters. Yes there are Rich Black people in America ... Those who have made it in from all walks of life... The ones you hear about are entertainers and athletes. Women of all races bring home less income and own fewer assets, on average, than men of the same race, but for single black women the disparities are so overwhelmingly great that even in their prime working years their median wealth amounts to only $5.
In a groundbreaking report released Monday by a leading economic research group, social scientists turned a spotlight on the grave financial challenges facing an often overlooked group of women, many of whom could not take an unpaid sick day or repair a major appliance without going into debt.
