As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We have split up the publishing duties, but we welcome everyone in IAN to do daily diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Malapropism

The word malapropism comes ultimately from the French mal à propos meaning "inappropriate" via "Mrs. Malaprop", a character in the Richard Brinsley Sheridan comedy The Rivals (1775) who habitually misused her words. Malapropisms also occur as errors in natural speech. Malapropisms are often the subject of media attention, especially when made by politicians or other prominent individuals.
These just make me laugh =) It's really too easy to blurt out a word that is similar to one that means what you intend it to mean, but means something completely different.
Here are some malapropisms from famous people:

"He was a man of great statue." - Thomas Menino, mayor of Boston
"Texas has a lot of electrical votes." (electoral votes) - Yogi Berra
"Be sure and put some of those neutrons on it." (croutons) - Mike Smith
"Create a little dysentery among the ranks." (dissension) - Christopher Moltisanti from "The Sopranos"

I don't remember "All in the Family" too well. My father hated it, so we rarely watched it. I remember that Archie called his son-in-law "Meathead," and bawled at Edith constantly. But reading the quotes above, I had to giggle. i don't think such a terribly un-PC show could possibly air today. Instead, we have reality shows. Ugh.
