It's a team thing...

AFSCME has been doing a terrific job of being on the front lines, protecting Detroit workers from draconian cuts as the city works through the bankruptcy process. One of the things they have done is to put up the website Stand With Detroit that helps show the human side of the people affected by proposed cuts to retiree pensions and other measures being taken under Emergency Management. Be sure to stop by the site and sign their petition.

Today AFSCME is unveiling a powerful new video titled "Detroit Matters" that shows the faces and voices of some of the people affected by what's happening in Detroit. One of the most important parts of any effort to effect positive change is the telling of stories -- real stories told by real people -- and this video does that in a profound and effective way.

Watch it, share it, and be sure to visit Stand With Detroit to learn more.

The potential bankruptcy in Detroit is not solely a Detroit crisis; it is an American crisis. Financially devastated cities all across our nation are now struggling for their survival. The outcome in Detroit affects all of us and that's why AFSCME is calling for an urban agenda to strengthen our great cities. AFSCME will not give up on Detroit or the workers who built the city -- and neither should you.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Let no one deny it. This is a hidden war against Detroit. The current mayor tried valiantly to remediate the problems. Governor was determined to destroy that voting bloc whatever!

Years of neglect and graft! Don't doubt it. And many schemes to destroy the unions.

I LOVE Detroit. Born and bred. I think about "mile marker 45" in the ad from two years ago.

PLEASE support Detroit as a progressive and as a human being.

additional funding needed to fully payout the pension promises?  How does Detroit become a successful city again?

  •  This reminds me of a couple I met (6+ / 0-)

while doing GOTV in Nevada before the 2008 election. My canvasing partner and I knocked on a door, and an older white man answered. He told us he was registered, so I asked if there was anyone else in the household who needed to register (this was the next to last day voters could do so). He replied that there might be, and called out to his wife.

She told us that she wanted to vote, and in fact had never voted in her life. So, we went in and helped her with the forms.

This reminds me of them, because they told us that they were very worried about "the young kids coming up." The husband had retired from the automobile industry, and they had just moved from Ohio to be close to their daughters. They said how fortunate they were to have a decent pension, and didn't know how those coming up behind them would get by. This stuff matters.

      of America.

And those that currently have a pension will have it taken away from them within the next 5 years.

This is the path America is on.

Republicans and Democrats will see that this occurs.

As the number of people with pensions shrink which it has exponentially it will become more and more easy to target such a small group of people.  Who would bother speaking up for them?  In fact, those that have no pension are resentful of those that do and will vote to take away pensions with not a second thought of the promise made to a worker over a lifetime of work.

Pensions are contracts, but as we know contracts can be broken easily if you are one of the little people.  Now if you were a Wallstreet criminal and you were promised a bonus while you cratered the economy, your bonus contract must be upheld as we heard that mantra over and over again during the Wallstreet crime spree.

  •  Grew Up Around the Corner in Cleveland (8+ / 0-)

and hearing Motown and some fine Celtic trad from players and groups in the area.

When the "Detroit" auto industry was rescued, a lot of help went either directly or indirectly to saving Ohio jobs.

It was 40 years ago that the banksters and local energy companies conspired to make Cleveland bankrupt as a way to force the city to privatize an electric generating plant, under mayor Dennis Kucinich.

Partly because of his communication style, and because of the extremity of the claims, he struck many of us as a bit unhinged about it. Turns out he was showing us some of the American future.

Best of luck to you guys in resisting this travesty.
