A woman's voice was finally heard, but there are just five women on the Judiciary Committee, all Democrats, while there are 22 Republican men. So it's a slightly more representative gender balance than the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops—but only slightly.

Not to say that men can't have good ideas about abortion law! Take Rep. Jerry Nadler. The New York Democrat offered an amendment striking the entire bill and replacing it with the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which would protect pregnant women from job discrimination and require employers to make reasonable accommodations like allowing pregnant workers to carry water bottles. Naturally, the Republicans on the committee were having none of it, because basic protections for pregnant women are not a Republican priority. They're there to push an anti-abortion bill that's redundant since the federal government doesn't fund abortion anyway, but provides a great opportunity for Republicans to show once again just how extreme they are. Your basic Republican agenda item, in other words.
