Ever have a perfect day...or come close to it?
In Tuesday's New Day I mentioned having just had the best day and also exciting news for next Tuesday.
I had a day yesterday that was far better than I deserve. The whole damn thing was just a constant series of small pleasures. I hope everyone will have such a day today.
My
boss sent me secret radio waves of her desire for me to write about it. "Small pleasures." There's a small space between the thrilling realization of what we could still accomplish versus the sadness of the mess we've made of too many things. I love that little space. Hell, I live off that thin difference. I cultivate it like a garden in my mind. I pull out the weeds of depression, anxiety and apathy. I plant instead seeds of smiles and laughter I get/give every day.
Heh, that's how I live sane.
We've all had Mondays from hell, but I had a Monday this week from heaven. Got up and had time to actually completely read a couple of excellent diaries here. Noticed I had mail and found an order for some paralegal work...nice extra money. Made a pot of coffee that was much better than I usually achieve. Then gave my son an early ride to work. He was in a good mood and conversed with me like he was with a friend. Sweet.
I walked in where we both work with a cup of coffee in my hand. That was enough to make me the star of the day. "And where's MY coffee?" asks Jayden, the first person who sees me. I think to myself, "I can do that." I still had half an hour before work, so I walked around the corner to Peets and brought Jayden back a cup. The look of sheer joy on Jayden's face was a thing of beauty. Then as I passed a friend who recently had a miscarriage, I hear her jokingly mutter while she was looking down, "Jayden gets a coffee. Do I get my double something or other latte? Of course not. I don't even get a hello" Oh. I can do that. Out the door I go again. Made it back to work just in time with the double something or other latte. As I go up the stairs I hear her and Jayden laughingly trade barbs back and forth over which of them appreciates their coffee drinks more. That put the smile on my face.
Jayden went home a bit later. I see her Peets coffee on top of the piano where she apparently forgot it. I don't let it go to waste. I swear it was the best cup I recall ever tasting. It was really that good. Then Pat appears and asks, "Did someone throw out my Starbucks? Is that my coffee you're drinking?" I tell her that it is a Peets coffee I bought for Jayden. Then I realize it is actually a Starbucks. Oops. Pat jealously and indignantly says, "So you bought Jayden a cup of coffee and then you drank MINE!" Pat stays angry 10 seconds more and then breaks out with a giant hee-haw that causes the same reaction in me.
I just get through promising to bring Pat a cup the next time I work ("Sure you will, sure"), when Ricardo walks in. He works outside washing cars in front of parking meters. He's been doing that for the 16 years I've known him since he first landed here from Puerto Rico. He owes me a favor and decided to pay it off with the tip his customer just gave him - yup - a Starbuck's gift card. The hell? I give it to Pat. Happened just like that.
Then the Klezmer mercenaries march in. No divas this week. In five minutes they're playing and rocking hard. They throw in some Arabic fusion and I'm in heaven. From there the work day flowed like warm honey through my hands. When it was nearly over seven Mexican women (four of them co-workers) came in to say "Hi" after a girls night out. Brought a couple of new-born babies with them. Hugs all around. As I was leaving, another person shouted from way back, "Give me a hug." I can do that.
All that, and not a single complaint from any customer, employee or family member.
On the radio driving home comes a song I haven't heard in years (RIP Lou).
I get home and find a kosmail to the effect that the great Azazello is taking over Tuesdays at New Day for me. I'll get to start sleeping in on Tuesday. I can do that.

SFKossacks Welcome Matching Mole and bwren
with a Birding Event Plus Dinner

Last Sunday, matching mole, who flew in from the East Coast, and bwren, who flew in from Seattle, were picked up and chaffeured by the founder of Dawn Chorus, lineatus. She drove them to meet with other SFKossacks and Central Valley Kossacks to do some bird watching in the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area on San Francisco Bay. I'll leave the telling of that story up to lineatus in her Sunday morning series.
I'll be covering the dinner we had that evening to welcome our out-of-towners.

Wow, the standard setters for Daily Kos group organizing just one-upped the bar again! Not only do they meet for socializing, they get themselves on radio shows to advertise the event, they invite local candidates and progressive causes to speak to our Kossacks and then fully cater an event to reward all attendees. Wow. Just wow.
More than 30 Kossacks got together amping up and organizing the Asheville atmosphere for getting out the vote. Here's one photo:
