How bad does it have to be for the Chinese government to shut you down due to
tainted meat? Well for a country that has a dismal reputation for food safety
rock bottom seems to have been hit by the Chinese meat producer Husi which supplies much of the meat for US based fast food joints. What they have been doing is mixing outdated tainted meat with fresh meat in volumes not acceptable to government. You heard that right some mixing is allowed and probably expected but looks like they exceeded the allowed ratio.
An undercover reporter posing as a worker at a local arm of U.S.-based supplier OSI filmed colleagues combining expired meat with fresh cuts and then lying to McDonald’s inspectors, the government-published Shanghai Daily reported today.
“There is even a manual outlining the mix ratios” for combining substandard and fresh chicken meats, the paper said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
has approved four plants in China to process chicken for export to the United States making this information of utmost importance to the US consumer. That's right, the USDA says that chicken has to be produced in the US; then can be shipped to China for processing then returned to the US for sale. Crazy huh?
The scandal surrounding Husi Food, which is owned by OSI Group of Aurora, Illinois, has added to a string of safety scares in China over milk, medicines and other goods that have left the public wary of dairies, restaurants and other suppliers.

Starbucks Corp. on Tuesday said it removed from its shelves sandwiches made with chicken that originated at Husi. Burger King Corp. said it stopped using hamburger it received from a supplier that used product from Husi. Pizza restaurant chain Papa John's International Inc. announced it stopped using meat from Husi.
Husi is owned by an American company, doesn't that make you feel better?
