Just got done reading this diary. I wont say much about the Ray Rice situation except that the incident and the cover up (because there is no doubt in my mind that there is a coverup afoot within the NFL and the Baltimore Ravens about this horrid domestic violence) is disgusting, and I agree with Keith that NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell should resign immediately.
Can I just say that watching that video of Olbermann made me miss his political commentary a lot. The man, for a lot of us in the darkest days of the Bush Administration, was a light at the end of the tunnel. We would turn to him, night after night, and see, on full display, the horrors of the Bush Administration at work. And we rallied around it. I would say, that in liberalism's darkest hour in the United States, Keith was the lone voice keeping everyone sane.
Keith not only was a liberal political commentator extraordinaire, he was also a top notch kossack who wrote many, many diaries. Not only did I look forward to his program nightly, I looked forward to his special commentary on dailykos. He was every bit the firebrand here that he was on television.
And then there was the break up at MSNBC, and the move to Current. At the time of the move, I didn't have Current (which is now Al Jazeera America, a top notch REAL journalism outfit that I watch nightly), so I could no longer watch Countdown, a program that I had loved so much. Barack Obama had won the presidency, dems had at least some sway in congress, and the darkness of the Bush Administration, at that point, was nothing but a distant, horrible memory. By that time, Rachel had taken over Keith's star at MSNBC, and I do love me some Rachel Maddow. But she never did completely fill the hole Keith left. She is awesome, don't get me wrong, but different than Olbermann. Olbermann's rants and special comments, his diaries here at the kos, his Worst Person in the World Segment, god I miss it all.
I feel like we have begun to lose focus, to lose that anger, that frustration, that primal liberal scream that was so unifying in the darkest years of the Bush Administration, and I feel like, after watching that video about Ray Rice, Olbermann is the only one that can truly provide the voice to that scream. I love Rachel, I love Chris and Ed and Lawrence, but none of them will ever be Keith fuckin' Olbermann.
I know, he was a primadonna who ruined his own contract and will probably never host another political talk show on primetime television. He burnt many bridges on his way out, and most likely will never work for another news channel again, certainly not MSNBC. But I want SOMETHING from him. A podcast. Perhaps a progressive talk radio program? A weekly special comment at kos? A weekly youtube video? SOMETHING!
Feel free to disagree with me. I know there are tons of mixed feelings about Keith here at kos. But I would love it if he were to come back to politics.
