I just saw today's nutpick-a-palooza. I originally thought of posting this as a comment there, but I didn't want to detract from the point of the diary (racist assholes being racist assholes). However walking away from the diary, the one thing I did NOT want is for people to support/buy from FCKH8 just because of that video, or to spite those who responded negatively. FCKH8 does not care about social causes. They just leap on highly sensitive issues an an attempt to profit off of the left (i.e., us). Want evidence? Check below the fold.
First off: The purpose of the video is to sell a shirt. In fact, they say that they'll donate five dollars from each sale to charities and communities. Great, right? Except they refuse to disclose who, exactly, they'll be donating the money to. They eventually (reluctantly) said they would be donating to the nonprofit Race Forward, who proceeded to immediately disavow any connections, saying they would not accept any money from them.
They have now named four organizations they intend to donate to: The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, the NAACP, the Brown Memorial Fund, and Crossroads Anti-Racism Organizing & Training. They claim they will publicly show their donations when they send them every week- but as of yet they have done nothing (the only one of which that's verifiable is the Brown Memorial Fund- the GoFundMe page has no donations from FCKH8 shown).
Plus, it's not like FCKH8 has been publicly against racism before now. All their prior marketing efforts were aimed at the LGBT community, this is their first anti-racism campaign. And if their past efforts are any indication, they only care about their supposed supported group as far as is convenient. Want some examples? Let's start with some nice intersectionality, the time they decided to stereotype both gay men AND black women in the same ad:
How about the time they insinuated all gay men were just gynophobes? For added bonus, note that not all lesbians have vaginas and not all gay men hate vaginas- right away ignoring the 'T' part of the acronym (sexuality is more complicated than just parts, m'kay).
Or the time they
literally stole a shirt design outright from an actual charity.
They are also notoriously exclusionary of nonbinary
genders/sexualities.
Finally, to cap it off, they operate more like scammers than a legitimate business. Seriously, how many legitimate businesses get an F from the BBB?
So please, don't let the charming little video (written by a white guy) fool you- FCKH8 doesn't care about equality, they care about padding their wallets.
