Presidents Xi Jinping and Barack Obama will call on other G20 countries at next week's G20 Summit to fast forward action on climate change by accelerating submissions of their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) in preparations for the 2015 Climate Talks in Paris.
“The US-China announcement is a watershed moment in the fight against climate change. Having the world’s two biggest emitters step forward together is a critical building block in constructing the 2015 Agreement,” said Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Hon, Tony de Brum.
“Most significantly, the US and China have indicated that their post-2020 efforts must put us on a pathway to a low-carbon global economy, and to limit warming to below 2 degrees Celsius. The proposed targets are significant, but we are not yet on track. The next 12 months are a chance to further bend the curve towards limiting annual global emissions to 40GT by 2025, as required by the latest science.”
The INDCs, presented at the UNFCCC COP19 in Warsaw last winter, call on governments to prepare by the first quarter of 2015 national pledges to transition to clean energy future. The INDCs enable tracking progress and establish a collective ambition among all parties towards mitigating climate change which will be included in the binding 2015 agreement.
“Today’s announcement sets the stage for all other major emitters to quickly follow suit. Next week’s G20 is the perfect opportunity for the world’s biggest economies to recommit to having their proposed targets on the table by March 2015, at the very latest. I look forward to discussing this personally with both Chinese President Xi and Indian Prime Minister Modi during their respective visits to the Pacific following the G20.”
