A rat and trash—you make the call on which is Chuck C. Johnson and which is the Washington Post.
Chuck C. Johnson is a professional troll. He exists to whip up far-right fervor in order to get himself attention and donations. So it's the lowest form of trolly clickbait that the
Washington Post is trying to piggyback off of Johnson's notoriety to get itself attention for a profile of him after his latest attack on common decency.
Before he made his name in the Mississippi Senate primary doing things like accusing Sen. Thad Cochran's campaign of buying votes and tweeting out the call-in number for a Cochran campaign conference call, Johnson was part of a discredited Daily Caller story accusing a Democratic senator of having paid for sex in the Dominican Republic. This is the kind of guy Chuck C. Johnson is, so it was totally in character for him to post what he alleged to be the name of "Jackie," the woman at the center of the controversial Rolling Stone story about how the University of Virginia handles rape cases.
And that earned Johnson a Washington Post profile. Not a takedown, either. Oh, Terrence McCoy's piece quotes some of Johnson's critics, but it gives equal time to his admirers:
The message immediately split followers into two groups: those who hated it and those who loved it. “You’re a modern Joan of Arc,” one admirer told Johnson on Sunday. “Doing God’s work even when the big names say you’re the devil.” Another called him “a real American hero.”
Others weren’t as enthused, which seemed to suit Johnson just fine.
Um, yeah, because he wants attention. And because to get donations from the kind of people who give someone money for publicizing the name of an alleged rape victim, you need to have pissed off enough people to look like you're somehow sticking it to the man by victimizing a woman.
This is the Washington Post, and the Post has to own that these are its standards. And when the day comes that Johnson thinks he can rake in a bunch of donations by attacking the Post, however fraudulently, the Post will have made that particular bed and should have fun lying in it.
