As we saw in Seattle the previous night at the #RentControl town hall hosted by two members of the City Council there, there can hardly be a more pressing issue than one effecting the three basic needs. Many, around the world, are in danger of not being able to afford shelter and housing, and it's becoming more of a pronounced problem than being discussed here. Right now the people of Brixton, England have come together to demonstrate against further deterioration of their lives.
Why are we in such a crisis? Well, what did people expect the outcome to be, when we allowed Wall St criminals to loot the Treasury and the Federal Reserve and walk away with interest free money?
Still don't get it? Instead of reigniting the economy, these duplicitous bastards in banking took that ransom money and hoarded it for themselves, then payed their puppet minions in upper management exorbitant bonuses, greased their nepotistic beneficiaries from the Power Elite Ivy League schools and lured fresh-faced dupes out of college desperate for any job that will help pay off their 6-figure student loans. They've got them, and you and me, by the balls. Here's why:
They've also been solidifying their positions in the market, stocks and housing. They've been buying up huge swaths of real estate all over the world have managed to find even more ways, through things like massive computer-generated high-speed trades, to deceive and ultimately set up for another major crash of, the financial markets.
Our neighborhoods get plundered and pillaged by more and more high-rise luxury living for the wealthy, complete with boutique shopping and all kinds of convenience lifestyle stores. It may not look so bad, right? You might even welcome some of it on the surface. But the dirty secret is your rents start moving up fast, the neighborhood becomes unaffordable, there's less affordable housing because everyone is now scrambling for it and the small local businesses you patronized gets blown out to with skyrocketing retail rents.
Neither the Dem or Repugs have done nothing to stop this. Not one bank CEO is in jail. Like killer cops in our streets who kill black and brown people with impunity, there's no deterrent for their criminal behavior on Wall St either. It's a two-tiered justice system on both accounts.
The Twitter feed coming out of Brixton should gives us hope. #ReclaimBrixton is just another example of solidarity between the 99% who are sick and tired enough of being churned up in the relentless grinder of unabated capitalism.
This is a tip of the hat to our mates there.
