Pollsters have asked American citizens whether going to war in Iraq was "worth it", as though they were asked whether a particularly spendy steak dinner was worth the money. A more appropriate question might have been "was the Iraq war morally and/or legally justified?"
The WWII allies sent a whole passel of German soldiers to the gallows after the war for, among other crimes, engaging in aggressive war, which may be defined as armed conflict without just cause - self defense being the clearest. Please take the time to read what has been written about the Nuremberg trials, by Justice Robert Jackson and others.
If we are to use the same criteria to judge whether the individuals in the Bush administration pushed us into an unjustified war of aggression by lying about the "evidence" that Hussein possessed, and was willing to use WMDs, they are just as guilty of war crimes as any hanged Nazi.
So long as Americans deceive themselves about what really happened, we will be at risk of repeating the same fustercluck.
