The Irish are headed to the polls today for a nationwide vote on same-sex marriage and thousands of Irish citizens have gone to extraordinary lengths to get home to vote. In fact, the #HomeToVote hashtag is trending worldwide and flat-out winning the internet today:

According to a Twitter spokeswoman, 48,000 tweets with the #HomeToVote hashtag were posted on the social media site in just 24 hours, "a significant volume of tweets from an Irish perspective".

Judging by the hashtag's popularity and the photos being tweeted, Ireland seems ready for equality. A few of the tweets trending:

Judging by the enthusiasm and the effort, it appears the country may drain every Guinness beer on tap in celebration of equality. Well done, Ireland!
