Good Morning Kossacks and Welcome to Morning Open Thread (MOT)
We're known as the MOTley Crew and you can find us here every morning at 7:00 am Eastern (and perhaps sometimes earlier!). Feel free to volunteer to take a day - permanently or just once in awhile. With the Auto Publish feature you can set it and forget it. Sometimes the diarist du jour shows up much later: that's the beauty of Open Thread...it carries on without you! Volunteer in the comment threads.
Click on the MOT - Morning Open Thread ♥ if you'd like us to show up in your stream.

With gratitude to eyo for highlighting today's video.
The Russian River flows southward through Sonoma and Mendocino counties in Northern California. As our own eyo tells of living near the river at a time when it could feed his big family:
My Pa taught me to fish there. We caught perch and steelhead trout. There were crawfish traps to set and check. My cousin would pick abalone at low tide at River's End and I'd pound them out with rocks for a beach barbeque. One summer, the blackberries were so thick along the highway we baked seven pies in one weekend.

The makers of the following film explain how agricultural uses impact the Russian River and its watershed and explore how people can re-establish their connection to the river.

ABOUT THE FILM
THE RUSSIAN RIVER: ALL RIVERS – The Value of An American Watershed explores the diverse forces which have come to shape one of California's iconic rivers — forces which impact rivers and watersheds throughout the world. It examines how the Russian River has been used, and what the consequences of that use have been. By looking at the effects of mining, logging, fishing, agriculture, diversion and development, the film conveys a historical perspective for the river's condition. Scientists, educators, policy makers, activists and citizens offer their perspectives on how this resource has been used and managed.
