For the first time in decades when you make a call after midnight nobody will be collecting your Metadata. However the Senate has the necessary 60 votes to move forward with the USA Freedom act next week if Rand Paul will allow them.
What will happen after midnight:
The "lone wolf" provision of the law will expire that allows agencies to target suspected terrorist who don’t have direct connection to terrorist groups or rogue nations
Roving wire taps will expire that allows a person to be follows no matter what electronic device he is using
Section 215 of the Patriot Act will expire which has been the basis to collect bulk phone records (the Metadata of millions of Americans) although investigations already in progress will be allowed to continue.
Lesser-known powers under Section 215 will also end that allows other agencies like the FBI and the CIA to collect other data like financial date, wire transfers and companies internet business records that they think might expose a terrorist network, Domestic or international.
For many of you this will be the first time that you have ever had anything like privacy in your life. The only difference that you might notice is there is no longer heavy breathing or odd noises in the background of your phone calls..
The USA Freedom Act is expected to pass later this week so enjoy you privacy while it last.
