Alabama's Senate has passed SB-377 by a 22-3 vote, which would abolish the issuance of marriage licenses in the state. Instead, if you want to get married, you have to file a contract with the state that says "yes, we are legally authorized to be married".
Since Alabama law does not permit same-sex marriages, gay couples couldn't file a contract saying they are legally allowed to marry.
If this passes the House (which is likely), and the Governor Bentley signs it (it's possible. He's been outspoken against same-sex marriages), it could end up in front of SCOTUS.
