Some of the people around here seem to enjoy photo diaries, so here I go again, exploring the local (to me) natural habitat.

Today we feature photos I shot during a recent outing in Nose Hill Park here in Calgary, Alberta. The park covers 11 square kilometres of land inside the city boundaries. It's sort of our version of Central Park, but without a stage for a Simon & Garfunkel concert (yes I'm dating myself there). OK not really Central Park. It's more of a wildlife preserve, but with little remaining wildlife, and a lot more hills. And the excursion isn't just a walk in the park, it's more like hiking, with a lot of trail climbing. So it's completely different. On this particular day, even the insects seemed to be mostly AWOL.
We begin at 7AM, as the clouds on this cool morning begin to clear, eventually giving way to a warm and sunny day.

As the sun comes out, so does plant life.

It was a fine morning for running on the trails, if you're into that sort of thing.

From hillside, there's a lovely view toward downtown.

And looking further northeast from the same spot, YYC airport can be seen sprawling over the background.

A splash of colour brightens up the hillside.

Some hikers working their way upward. This is not the steepest nor the tallest of the hills in the park.

And finally, my car is in that parking lot at the base of the hill. It's a longer and steeper trek than it looks.

Exactly one week later, I returned to the park, but via a different entrance, with somewhat different terrain and vegetation. We climbed much higher up on this second trek, and then headed down into a valley. The night before, the region was hit by a hail storm. Remnants of ice were still scattered about during these morning hours.

Morning dew drops were everywhere.

A dandelion on its last gasp.

This multi-layered fungus growing on an old tree stump was about 8 inches across.

The lay of the land is quite different here from that of the first day's adventure. It is much more lush down in the valley.
