President Obama signing the letters to 46 prisoners who had their sentences commuted
Early Monday morning, President Obama completely commuted the prison sentences for 46 men and women who were serving time for nonviolent drug offenses, including a dozen men and women who were serving life in prison.
Below, find one of the 46 letters that President Obama sent. While the letter itself says little about the inequities of drug sentencing, President Obama addressed it well in the video posted to the White House Facebook page here.
While it is true that hundreds of thousands of men and women are in American prisons right now for nonviolent drug offenses, this is a small start in the right direction of showing our country that not only is it outrageously expensive to incarcerate people for a lifetime for these crimes, it's just not right. We can only hope that many more commutations are coming.
