In
a special report from Spencer Ackerman and Zach Stafford of
The Guardian, it was just revealed that an astounding 82 percent of the 3,500 people formally arrested at Chicago's notorious Homan Square interrogation facility were African American in spite of the reality that African Americans make up just 33 percent of greater Chicago.
Ackerman and the Guardian team have done an amazing job pushing for new information and insight on what really goes down inside of Homan Square. What they found was utterly disgusting.
Of the 82 percent of African Americans arrested inside of Homan (a total of 2,974 people), only three people received documented visits from an attorney. This is particularly disturbing because multiple people have detailed for The Guardian horrific arrests in which they were chained to walls for hours, and even days. Others have come forward to describe being sexually abused by police inside of the facility.
Despite the quadruple-digit number of arrestees held at Homan Square, the Chicago police proffered only three arrestees receiving visits from lawyers between 3 September 2004 and 1 July 2015. Two of them occurred on the same day in January 2013.
Unless approximately 3,500 people in custody waived their right to counsel, the revelation complicates – if not contradicts – the police’s March statement that “any individual who wishes to consult a lawyer will not be interrogated until they have an opportunity to do so”.
Described by others as a secret black site with
men in masks resembling members of ISIS, Homan Square is now under national and international scrutiny as it turns out that
one of one of Chicago's lead interrogators was also brought in for brutal interrogations at Guantanamo prison.
When you can, please read the full report at The Guardian. It reveals a deep rabbit hole of corruption and misconduct that many are desperately trying to ensure is not discovered.
