Reince Priebus is always super convincing
Reince Priebus has found
just the right shade of lipstick to put on the pig that is Donald Trump's presidential candidacy. It's a "net positive," according to the Republican National Committee chair, because a lot of people watched the first debate and that's good for
all the Republican candidates:
Well, you know, look, I think it brings a lot of interest to the Republican field. I think it's a net positive for everybody and I also think it's an indicator that there's a lot of folks out there that are just sick and tired of Washington. I think Donald Trump's tapped into that. You look at the first debate, we had, I think it was five or six times more viewers, in the beginning of August, than any debate in the history of either party. [...]
I think it's a positive for our party. I mean, when you have 30 million people watching, not to mention we've got 16 other incredible candidates out there, I think we're showing America that we're the young, diverse party offering a whole slew of options for people, and that's a good thing.
Ah, yes. Trump is a good thing for Republicans because of the attention he's getting for
other Republicans. Strong praise.
Those 30 million people were actually 24 million people (six million tuned in for the kid's table debate, but I'm going to assume those weren't six million entirely different people), but never mind that: what's important is that they watched those 16 other incredible candidates take wildly unpopular positions like opposing abortion even in cases of rape or incest. That may be a net positive in the Republican primary, but it's not going to help the party's nominee come the general election.
Then, of course, Priebus pivoted to attacking Hillary Clinton, insisting simultaneously that the Democratic Party is in the middle of a "coronation" and that Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden are likely to defeat Clinton. Because if there is one set of talking points Priebus has down cold, it's the contradictory, nonsensical, falsehood-filled attack on Clinton.
