Located in the historic Fort Missoula in Missoula, Montana, the Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History provides displays ranging from the Frontier Period to the War on Terrorism. The Museum is housed in Building T-316 which was originally constructed in 1936 as the District Headquarters of the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps. The Museum moved into this location in 2000.
A display of women’s uniforms as well as biographies of military women is in a display entitled “Measured as Citizens of the Nation: American Women of World War II.”
Shown above is a display about Louis Charlo, the Salish Indian from the Flathead Reservation who raised the first American flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Several hours later this flag was replaced by a larger flag, the raising of which was captured in an iconic news photograph.
