The guy no one likes wants to do something no one will notice.
Jim Webb, stuck at null in the polls in a Democratic primary in which his role is apparently to whine about stuff, is now considering
going independent.
"I believe that I am where the Democratic Party traditionally has been. The Democratic Party, and the reason I've decided to run as a Democrat, has been the party that gives people who otherwise have no voice in the corridors of power a voice," he said during the debate.
Webb is a true maverick, and has held ideas at odds with his party's on everything from climate change to affirmative action to women's rights, to LGBT rights, to guns, to abortion, to fossil fuel and more.
He's at odds with Democrats on climate change and affirmative action and women's rights and gay rights and guns and abortion and fossil fuels and MORE (like supporting the Confederate flag in South Carolina, loving him some Ronald Reagan, increasing defense spending, opposing real immigration reform, etc).
There's a word for people who believe that shit ... it's on the tip of my tongue ... don't tell me! ...
"The party has moved way far to the left," Webb, a former Marine, told "Fox News Sunday" in July. "That's not my Democratic Party in and of itself. We need to bring working people back into the formula."
There's already a Democrat in the race whose entire campaign is focused on working people and economic issues. Then again, that guy isn't against women and gays and African Americans and Latinos, and doesn't want to see their cities end up under water. So apparently, not Jim Webb's Democratic Party.
Which really, isn't anyone else's Democratic Party. At least not since Strom Thurmond quit it.
Update: Well, that was that. Webb has dropped out of the Democratic primary, which is the smartest thing he's done all year. Staying out would be the next smartest thing, though there's always the Republican side. Apparently, they'll take just about anyone.
