Statewide Results: KY | MS | NJ | OH | PA | VA
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:22 PM PT (David Jarman): To recap, Republican Matt Bevin (whom you might remember from losing his tea-flavored primary challenge to Mitch McConnell in 2014) has won a surprising (to the extent that no poll had given him the lead) victory in Kentucky's gubernatorial race. On the plus side, if the results hold in VA-SD-10, the Democrats are on track to pick up the pivotal seat in the Virginia State Senate and flip control of that chamber back to the Dems.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:24 PM PT (David Jarman): We have a full-length wrapup of the Kentucky race here.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:30 PM PT (David Jarman): Philadelphia mayor: Oh, by the way... Philadelphia officially has a new mayor, progressive Dem Jim Kenney. (He had only nominal GOP opposition from Melissa Murray Bailey in this dark blue city; today was mostly a formality after he won the Dem primary.)
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:38 PM PT (David Jarman): VA House: While we wait for more votes in pivotal SD-10 in Virginia (which will mostly come from rural Powhatan County), let's look at the state House, where Dems aren't within reach of the majority this year but have some good pickup opportunities. They have the lead in the two likeliest pickups, HD-86 and 87, suburban NoVa seats where the GOPers retired. Dems Jennifer Boysko and John Bell are at 53 and 54 percent, respectively, with around 20 percent reporting.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:43 PM PT (David Jarman): KY Auditor: Democratic incumbent Adam Edelen is conceding his race, which hasn't been called by the AP but where he's trailing 51-49 with 90 percent reporting. That has some repercussions because he was the Dems' preferred pick as a candidate to go against Rand Paul in 2016's Senate election ... doesn't look like that's likely to happen now. Meanwhile, Dems Andy Beshear and Alison Lundergan Grimes are still narrowly leading the AG and SoS races.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:47 PM PT (David Jarman): KY SoS: The AP has called the SoS race for Dem incumbent Alison Lundergan Grimes, so there'll at least be one downballot Dem left. (Andy Beshear also leads the Attorney General race, by about 7,000 votes). The AP has confirmed that Adam Edelen loses the Auditor's race, though.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 5:56 PM PT (David Beard): VA-10: According to a local reporter, the Republican Glen Sturtevant gained over 5,000 more votes than the Democrat Dan Gecker in rural Powhatan County, which all but assures him victory with only three other precincts outstanding. This means the Republicans will retain control of the Virginia Senate.
