Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:24 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Here is a brief recap of where we stand on Election Night 2015:
The Good:
- Democrats look poised to sweep to majority control of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, a major victory.
- Democrats, at present, are in leads that would give them a five-seat gain in the New Jersey state assembly.
- Democrats have picked up the mayoralty of Indianapolis, as Joe Hogsett ran to a landslide 62-37 victory.
The Bad:
- Every seat in the Virginia State Senate held firm, meaning the GOP will hold on until 2019 with a bare 21-19 majority.
- Democrats also had a frustrating night in the Virginia House of Delegates. Though they look likely to gain a seat or two, they also had near misses on several other potentially competitive seats.
- Democrats, pending a recount, appear to have come just 75 votes shy of unseating Manchester (NH) mayor Frank Gatsas.
The Ugly:
- Despite polls showing Democrat Jack Conway staked to a small lead in the battle to be the next governor of Kentucky, he was instead easily defeated by Republican Matt Bevin 53-44-3.
- Republicans, after a horrid 2011 in Kentucky, won four of six statewide offices, knocking out state auditor (and much-talked about 2016 Senate prospect) Adam Edelen in the process.
- The HERO initiative in Houston has gone down to defeat.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:25 PM PT (Taniel): Maine Maine voters have adopted the "Promote Cleans Election" bill—the Bangor Daily News has called it. With 80 percent reporting, the "yes" is ahead 55 percent to 45 percent. In Portland, voters rejected a proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15, 57 percent to 43 percent.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:27 PM PT (Steve Singiser): JeffCo School Board: Forgot about one huge item on the "good" agenda. I know it sounds deep in the weeds, but given the national attention, it's a worthy note. The reactionary school board in Jefferson County, Colorado, which had sought to make a more "exceptional" U.S. History curriculum (see: Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia...), has been recalled.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:30 PM PT (Steve Singiser): PA Supreme Court: Now over 70 percent reporting, and the raw vote margin for the "Democratic sweep" is around 204,000 votes. It is looking very, very good for the blue team here.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:34 PM PT (Steve Singiser): VA-HD-87: We're happy to report that a second Daily Kos-endorsed candidate has been declared a victor tonight by the AP. John Bell has taken the formerly GOP-held 87th district in NoVa, defeating Chuong Nguyen by a 52-46 margin.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:37 PM PT (Steve Singiser): NJ-Assembly: A new wave of votes has given the GOP back two of the five seats they were losing tonight, as their incumbents in AD-16 (Jack Ciattarelli and Donna Simon) have eased ahead. But the margins are absurdly small—Simon currently leads Democrat Andrew Zwicker by...17 votes.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:44 PM PT (David Jarman): PA-SD-37: There was one special election in Pennsylvania's State Senate tonight, caused when Dem Matt Smith resigned his seat in June in this reddish seat (44 percent Obama) in 2012) in Pittsburgh's suburbs. This seemed like a lost cause as soon as Smith resigned, and indeed GOPer Guy Rethenschaler, a former district judge, picked up the seat, winning 54-46. This takes the GOP's edge in the state Senate up to 31-19.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 7:50 PM PT (Steve Singiser): PA-Supreme Court: The AP has now officially called it—the Democrats will sweep the three seats on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. With that, they are now in the majority on the court. A big, big win for the Democrats.
