“Brothers and sisters, now is not the time to think small!” ~ Bernie Sanders
I look around and see a lot of people going about their business as if nothing has changed, as if we are not, by following our usual routine, posing an ever increasing existential threat to the ecosphere and to our species. I'm reminded of a relative who worships capitalism because it put a truck in his driveway. He knows little or nothing about greenhouse gases, rainforest depletion, ocean acidification, feed-back loops, tipping points, global warming or climate change and has no sense at all of the limitations, sensitivities and vulnerabilities of the planet. He thinks things are going to always be more-or-less exactly what they are right now, about which he knows so very little.
Sadly, if unsurprisingly, it's rare to hear an American politician speaking passionately and straightforwardly about things that really matter. This is what we've always gotten and will always get from Bernie Sanders.
“We owe it to future generations to move aggressively to save this planet.” ~ Bernie Sanders
Bernie's nightmare
My nightmare is that 20, 30, 40 years from now, our kids and our grandchildren will look members of Congress in the eye and they will say, "The scientists told you what would happen and you did nothing. Why did you not react? How hard was it to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and transform our energy system away from coal and oil into energy efficiency and wind, solar, geothermal and other sustainable energies?"
How irresponsible can we be to ignore what the entire scientific community is saying? Why is it that my Republican colleagues accept the research on cancer, on Alzheimer’s, on all kinds of illnesses, but somehow when it comes to the issue of climate change, my Republican friends are in denial?
Bernie Sanders
The stupidity of opposition to a just transition away from dirty energy is more evident every day. Jobs and profits are steadily disappearing from fossil fuel and mineral production and heading to conservation, efficiency, and renewables. Numerous convincing studies of the economic, ecosystem, and human health benefits of a full transition to a fully clean energy economy have appeared. Economists agree it’s far cheaper to take action now than later, that the longer we wait the greater the costs of all sorts, and that it’s ultimately cheaper, smarter and more humane to prevent “natural disasters” than it is to respond to and rebuild after them

Sanders: Call for 'Political Revolution' Is About Mass Movement, Not Me
'Enough is enough. This country belongs to all of us and not a handful of billionaires.'
"This is not about Bernie Sanders," the candidate said to the room filled beyond capacity.
"You can have the best president in the history of the world but that person will not be able to address the problems that we face unless there is a mass movement, a political revolution in this country. Right now the only pieces of legislation that get to the floor of the House and Senate are sanctioned by big money, Wall Street, the pharmaceutical companies. The only way we win and transform America is when millions of people stand up as you’re doing today and say. 'Enough is enough. This country belongs to all of us and not a handful of billionaires.'"
The fight ahead, he told the crowd, "Is about you."
