I don’t just say that because I have red hair either. Red heads are thought to be quick to act, bold and brash. Qualities that would be very useful in the Democratic Party in Congress. Sadly, none of those personality traits are exclusive to red heads or even common in redheads. What is true is that many red heads are left handed (the two genes are linked), and Ireland and Scotland (thanks, Grandma!) have more redheads than other countries.
Another thing that is often true about redheads is that they are thick skinned. This comes from being teased over the years; “Ginger”, “Carrot Top” and even “Hey Red” can get tiresome. Thick skin is very useful in congress indeed.
Virginia is lucky in that they have a red head running in the 7th district. Eileen Bedell is running against David “Mr. No” Brat, in Va’s 7th Congressional district. Brat is far, far to the right of even most Republicans and as Ms. Bedell says “people need to pay attention to how he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare”.
From an article in the Chesterfield Observer:
– the sprawling, heavily rural 7th District still figures to be friendly turf for Brat’s first re-election bid.
That didn’t deter Bedell from filing her campaign paperwork in January. When nobody else sought the Democratic nomination by the filing deadline last Friday, the first-time candidate happily embraced the opportunity to unseat Brat in November’s general election.
“You have to believe in the underdog,” she said during an interview Saturday morning.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people who said they’re happy I’m running, but that I can’t win,” Bedell said. “You can’t approach any competition that way.”
Eileen Bedell is from Virginia, went to school there (graduating from high school at the age of 16), went to college there, and her law practice is there. Her love of the state comes through clearly when she talks about all the things she sees possible. She is raising her family there and the value she places on that shows in her attention to the future; the environment, the economy, health care. Time and time again she refers to the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. I love that in a candidate.
Is she considered a Progressive? No. She doesn’t live in a district that would ever elect a progressive. She describes herself as a moderate. And I’m ok with that. Now, don’t get me started on how the Blue dog Dem in MY congressional is not even moderate, he’s conservative and this is a blue district that no Republican can win. Aarrgghh! So, I’ll give Eileen Bedell a pass on that one, I could use some moderation in my life and we could all use some in Congress.
Her Facebook page is here and her donation page is here. She says she doesn’t mind being an underdog, but let’s make sure she’s a well funded underdog, she’s running against one of the worst of the worst Republican Congressmen, let’s give this red head a fighting chance.
