If "it's the economy dummy", we should check on what Dave Brat has done to bring new jobs to the Seventh District.
On his government website, Dave Brat has a page entitled "Congressman Dave Brat's Growth Plan", with a subtitle of "My agenda to Strengthen Business and American Employment." On that page, Dave lists about 45-50 pieces of legislation he has sponsored or cosponsored, divided into categories. It's very impressive. If you didn't analyze it, you would think that Dave Brat has accomplished a great deal since he's been in Congress. But...
Of the bills Dave claims as accomplishments, forty have never passed the House, and most have never even gotten out of committee. In other words, they are not accomplishments at all. Another seven bills have passed the House but are highly unlikely to become law before the end of this session of Congress.
So, Dave Brat's growth plan boils down to one bill that he cosponsored (along with 234 other members) that was enacted into law. That bill became Public Law 114-60, the Protecting Affordable Coverage for Employees Act. It amends the Affordable Care Act and the Public Health Service Act to reclassify businesses with between 51 and 100 employees as large employers rather than small employers. I'm not sure how this change affects economic growth or how many new jobs it creates.
So, Dave Brat has misinformed us about his accomplishments as a Congressman. In fact he has accomplished almost nothing.
