Before the election, when he thought he might be losing, Donald Trump claimed the election was rigged. He may have been right. It may have indeed been rigged, in his favor. This very interesting article is an interview (by Simon Rosenfeld of Alternet) with Jonathan Simon, a longtime exit poll researcher and author of Code Red: Computerized Election Theft and the New American Century.
Simon explains how he has done exhaustive comparisons of exit polls to the actual vote results in precincts where the exit polling was done. He has found extensive and consistent evidence of what he calls a “red shift”, voting numbers that are significantly to the right of the exit poll numbers. For example:
“SR: Let's talk about what you found this week. I'm looking at your 2016 presidential chart. I'm looking at North Carolina for example, where it says the exit poll margin was 2.1% ahead for Clinton, but the final vote count showed Trump with a 3.8% lead. You have similar 4.4% Clinton lead in Pennsylvania but then losing by 1.2% to Trump, a 5.6% shift. You have Florida where she was ahead in exit polls by 1.3% and ends up losing by 1.3%, a 2.6% shift.”
Simon claims that the vast majority of differences between exit polls and vote counts — toward higher vote totals than the polls would suggest — break for Republicans, very rarely the other way. Simon will admit that none of this is proof, which cannot be checked because most voting records are kept secret, held by private companies, or purged. But as an economist, we have a saying — “Nature does not make leaps”. For all of the errors to consistently trend in the same direction would be an incredible coincidence. I’m convinced that we need a full investigation by a special prosecutor. How about you?
