There’s one question everyone's been asking since Nov. 8: What can I do to fight back against Trump? Here’s our answer: You can support Democratic candidates running for state legislatures nationwide. These are the people who can prevent the GOP from gerrymandering the House yet again, and that’s something we have to prevent at all costs if we’re ever to take back Congress.
And the good news is, you don’t have to wait to join the fight. There’s already a special election underway in Virginia for a Republican-held seat in the state House that just became vacant, and Democrat Cheryl Turpin, a progressive who teaches environmental science to high schoolers in Virginia Beach, has a real shot at picking it up.
In fact, this district—Virginia’s 85th—is very closely divided. According to our calculations, it gave Trump 47.1 percent of the vote to 46.5 for Clinton, a margin of just 6 tenths of a percent. That puts it within reach, though beating the Republican nominee, law enforcement officer Rocky Holcomb, won’t be easy. That's because turnout among Democratic-leaning voters typically drops when there isn’t a presidential race on the ballot, which is why we need to step in to help Turpin turn out the vote.
And there isn’t much time. The special election is on Jan. 10, and with the winter holidays intervening, we need to act fast. But that compressed timeframe also means that our contributions can go a long way. And how perfect would it be to deliver a message of resistance to Donald Trump just days before his inauguration?
