Bill Paley has got to be turning over in his grave.
The man currently in charge of the very company Paley founded, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, recently (2-29-2016) told attendees of the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference in San Francisco: “Donald’s place in this election is a good thing.”
According to Paul Bond’s 2-29-2016 article at www.hollywoodreporter.com, Moonves is thinking solely about the money CBS (and no telling how many other newsgathering television networks in America) rakes in from covering one Donald John Trump in Trump’s effort to buy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Yes, Moonves labeled the whole 2016 US presidential race a “circus” full of “bomb throwing,” but he still singled out the former host of competitor NBC’s The Apprentice:
"I've never seen anything like this, and this going to be a very good year for us. Sorry. It's a terrible thing to say. But, bring it on, Donald. Keep going.”
The bottom line: “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.”
In fact, Moonves thinks the whole ball of wax is fun.
FUN??
You think this is fun for the Muslims Trump wants to keep out of the United States...or for those Muslims already here?
Is all of this really fun for the 11 million undocumented Americans the former owner of the USFL’s New Jersey Generals wants to deport...or for their relatives?
Is any of this fun for the millions of Americans who are so sick and tired of the racism and sexism this country was built upon?
It can’t be fun for people who remember watching Walter Cronkite and his CBS Evening News predecessor, Douglas Edwards. Can’t be fun for people who remember when corporate media potentates treated news as news, not entertainment.
You can bet that Edwards and Cronkite are spinning in their own graves, too.
